Business Development: Technology: Chinese Government goes hard-core with Software April 10, 2006 After significant lobbying from the US government and companies such as Microsoft, the Chinese government is visibly much more supportive of the IP rights of software companies. A desire to stimulate the domestic hi-tech sector may well also have a large part to play. The Ministry of Information Industry (MII), the Ministry of Commerce, the National Copyright Administration and the Ministry of Finance jointly released regulations in April intended to stop the sale of PCs with pirated operating systems. The regulations require all new PCs sold in China to come with legal versions of operating systems. Currently, most new PCs sold in China do not come with operating systems, and the level of piracy is amongst the highest in the world. |
